Means Test Calculator

Important Information regarding the Means Test Calculator

Most individual debtors filing for bankruptcy relief are required to complete a means test. The means test takes into account your income, expenses and family size to determine whether you have enough disposable income to repay your debts.

The first part of the means test checks whether your household income is below your state’s median income. You will want to gather all of your income over the past six months. You can get an idea of your state’s median income on this chart from the Department of Justice. The second part covers your expenses over the past six months (things such as rent, groceries, clothing and medical costs). What’s left after allowable expenses is deemed disposable income that could be put toward paying off debt. You will want to be thorough and accurate when completing these forms.

You can download the means test calculator here.
